I travel far and wide, but lately I'm most fascinated by my own backyard.

What kind of spider is this?
This spider has a huge web on the back of my mailbox. I snapped this picture today while he was catching a moth. Anyone know what kind of spider it is? It is an inch and a half or so.
Confirmed by Lauren Thibault: That one is Argiope aurantia ... often referred to as the writing spider or black and yellow garden spider. Absolutely harmless but a beautiful addition to any yard!
I think I have identified this as a Black and Yellow Argiope. I used a very scientific method. I googled 'black and yellow spider Virginia'
