Baby Bird

Right outside our front door (and my office window) is a small boxwood. All day long I've been watching a small bird come and go from the little tree. After work we went out and looked to see if there was a nest. It was hard to see, but there was a little baby in there.

And here is a picture of one of the parents (both the mother and father seem to be hanging around and helping to feed the chick, but I don't know which one is the female.

March 24 - the next round of bloom

Every week in Virginia spring  something new is blooming. This week the redbud (a purple tree) started blooming everywhere. Some of my iris are blooming, the pansies planted last fall are back to life and full of flowers. Wild violets fill the field near the river.

I saw a Blue Heron (#16) and the Chirping Sparrow (#17) is back at the feeder.

Spring is starting

I've been gone for a week but was happy to see some of the spring trees starting to blossom. There are white trees in bloom on the golf course (I think these are ornamental pear) and my neighbor's cherry trees are starting to bloom.

The new bird for this weekend is the Common Grackle (#15)

Hawk

I think this is a red-tailed hawk (#6). It's very large. It has been coming through our yard every day in the early morning. It has a very regimented routine - going to the same trees at the same time each day, then moving on down toward the road in the later morning.

Cardinal

Cardinals are prettiest when there is a little white snow. I am going to count this as (#1) on my bird count for the year.

Hawk or Falcon?

We saw this beautiful bird of prey on a walk through our property this afternoon. I'm not sure if it's a hawk or a falcon. If you have suggestions, let me know. He had caught something and was perched on a stake in the ground, and flying back and forth to a spot on the ground about 20 feet away where it seemed he was eating something.  As we got closer he flew to some taller trees nearby.

Cardinals signaling the return of winter

I love cardinals. We saw a bright red one in a tree today. Winter is on the way.

Turkeys

October 29, 2011 An early snowstorm hit the east coast. We just got the southern tip with some snow falling, but no accumulation. In the morning, before it started snowing, there were some turkeys in the backyard.

A wildlife kind of day

A lot of activity in our yard today. What I think is a barn swallow has built a nest near our front door, another bird has built a nest in our newspaper box, we saw our Groundhog with two little ones following behind her, then a fox strolled through the back yard. Right around dusk we saw 5 deer frolicking in the field beside the house.

Blue Bird, Blue Bird, On My Window

Two blue birds visited today. The bright colors are so welcome on a cold gray winter day.

Unidentified Bird

We have seen this beautiful bird soaring around the property. I can't get a good picture of it. It has multiple colors. I think it may be an American Kestrel, but I'm not sure.
